From Transgender to the Heroes. The 2020 Parliamentary Elections in Mongolia

June 26th is the Parliamentary Elections Day in Mongolia. Mongolian Parliament consists of 76 members and they are elected via the multiple non-transferable vote. They are elected from 29 districts, with some districts having from 2 to 3 seats.

In this year’s elections 15 parties, four coalitions making 485 candidates and 121 independents are vying for 76 seats. So far we have the biggest number of independents. It is double compared to previous elections. The incumbent Mongolian People’s Party is projected to win by a landslide. The current Prime Minister has a high approval rating for handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been no local spread of COVID-19 in Mongolia. We have 215 people who were repatriated from abroad diagnosed with COVID-19. All of them were quarantined. There were no deaths due to the pandemic and 158 people have recovered so far.

These elections have been interesting for number of Firsts. We had for the first time:

a disabled person
transgender woman
6 candidates are campaigning from the detention facility.
